Wishlist: Mistborn Allomancy Vial

15 02 2009

Can you tell what book(s) I’m reading right now?

Anyway, Badali has new Mistborn jewelry available for purchase and right now I’m feeling sorely tempted. The allomancy pendants look a little funky though, but the vials are a pretty neat concept.  If anything I’d be a Soother, but I think it would just be a grand riot (harharhar inside pun if you’ve read the series– :)  I couldn’t resist) to hang a bead of atium around my neck.

I’m on the third book right now.  It’s been an exciting series so far.  What I’ve liked most is how it has built on itself.  I liked Mistborn.  I loved Well of Ascension, and Hero of Ages I can’t seem to put down.  Unless it is to google what kind of swag I can get, of course.  -winks-

Now if only I had $39.00 dollars.

Mistborn is a fantasy trilogy written by Brandon Sanderson, author of Elantris and Warbreaker in case you are wondering about what I am talking about.  He has also been chosen to finish the Wheel of Time series by Harriet McDougal, Robert Jordan’s widow and editor.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Publisher:  Quirk Books
ISBN: 978-1594743344
Page Count: 320  List Price: $12.95

Description: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies — Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Complete with 20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice), this insanely funny expanded edition will introduce Jane Austen’s classic novel to new legions of fans.

My Thoughts:

I can’t decide if I’m horrified or blown away by awesome.  What an unexpected and appropriate twist on the Austen revival motif (which has been done to death already).  And that cover rocks!

I hope Kitty is the first to become Zombie chow.

Buzz Aldrin Writes?

17 07 2008

Yeah, Buzz Aldrin the second man to walk on the moon. Who knew! And he writes Sci-Fi no less!

Encounter with Tiber (1997) by Buzz Aldrin and John Barnes
The Return (200) by Buzz Aldrin and John Barnes

Sadly both are out of print, though used copies seem to be readily available on Amazon.  I know it is a celebrity novelty purchase, but still…I want them.  I want them badly, and actually the blurb to The Return has really piqued my interest.  Hmmmm.

I just heard about this book recently from a friend and again on another blog.  I love this genre of SF, much more so than any of the space opera stuff out there.  I’ve always found it to be much darker and the characters more believable at times.  Also, it is incredibly cool that people have actually taken the genre and built all sorts of modded gadgets from things in their modern life.  If I weren’t so lazy, I might consider turning my little studio into Frankenstein’s lair from all the awesome tutorials out there.

Anyway, back to the book.  You can find the write up about it here at the Publisher’s website:  Tachyon Publications.  The collection looks like it has some really phenomenal writers contributing to it.

Michael Chabon / Neal Stephenson / James P. Blaylock / Joe R. Lansdale / Mary Gentle / Ted Chiang / Michael Moorcock / Jay Lake / Molly Brown / Stepan Chapman / Ian R. MacLeod / Rachel Pollack / Paul Di Filippo / Rick Klaw / Jess Nevins / Bill Baker

Be still my little cog-work heart, is that really Michael Chabon and Neal Stephenson up there!  Now all that’s left if for me to find the money for it in my sofa.
