From time to time a cover just grabs me, and I feel almost compelled to buy that book just to sit in on my shelf face-out. Can you guess how I do my decorating? Hehe. Anyway, when I come across one of these books I want to share it with everyone. It’s eye candy for the book worm in us all.
I loved this cover the moment I saw it in PW. I really liked the starkness of it and how the prongs are bent into claws, very creepy, very edgy. Brava, cover designer! So far though I still haven’t bought the book, which suprises -me- even. I see it all the over the place, but I don’t know what’s holding me back. Perhaps it is just the stress of finals.
As an aside: In publishing, a beauty contest refers to the competition between imprints in one house to acquire the same project. The imprint that can give the agent the best deal, wins the beauty contest. It may seem silly to have two imprints fighting over the same proposal if in the end they still work for the same company, but this really works out better for both the writer and agent. It keeps the market competitive in an age where small publishing groups are steadily be swallowed up by the beast that is MeglaPublishingdon.
